Norman Stockton Obituary

Norman D. Stockton, age 81, passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, April 6, 2026, at Grandbrook Memory Care in Greenwood. He was a longtime resident of Morgantown.

Norman was born in Martinsville on August 25, 1944, to the late Douglas A. and Vesta M. (Norman) Stockton. He grew up on the Stockton family farm spanning many generations, located just East of Morgantown. A proud 1962 graduate of Morgantown High School, he went on to attend Indiana University, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education, followed by both his Master’s in Education and his Education Specialist in Administration degrees. During high school, Norman enjoyed playing basketball, and while at Indiana University he was an active member of the IU Marching 100 Band.

Norman devoted more than 40 years to a distinguished career in education. He began teaching at Morgantown Elementary in 1966, then became Principal at Trafalgar Elementary. He served as Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Indian Creek Middle School and was Superintendent of the Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson United School Corporation for 6-years. Starting in 1990, he served as Business Manager for Johnson County Special Services. In 1994, he pivoted to Construction Control, working with schools on new building projects. He then returned to school administration in 1997 as Superintendent of Eminence Community Schools, concluding his career and retiring in 2006.

Throughout his career, Norman was passionate about mentoring students, coaching athletics, supporting his community, and excellence in education. He was a member of Morgantown United Methodist Church and its choir, the Morgantown Lions Club, the Indiana State Teachers Association, Phi Delta Kappa, the IU Marching Hundred Alumni Band, and served on the board of the First State Bank. In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, playing cards and traveling with friends, and family cookouts where he was well known for his secret recipe “Norm burgers”.

Above all, Norman was a devoted family man. He married his high school sweetheart and beloved wife, Sandy (Weaver) on January 31, 1965 in the Morgantown United Methodist Church, and he steadfastly dedicated himself to their relationship. They spent countless hours taking care of their 1864 home, gardening, and working on projects together. From coaching, to working second jobs for summer vacation funds, to always lending a hand with projects, he was consistently focused on supporting his family. He cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren and took great pride in their accomplishments. His steady presence, encouragement, and love will be deeply missed.

In addition to his parents, Norman was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra J. “Sandy” (Weaver) Stockton, and his brother, James D. “Jim” Stockton.

Norman is survived by his children, Wade (wife, Marie) Stockton of Smyrna, Georgia, and Cara (husband, Tyson) Burris of Franklin; and his grandchildren, Devin (wife, Sophia) Ankney, Brooke (husband, Nick) Davis, Brandon, and Wesley Burris, and Mason and Katherine Stockton; and great grandchildren, Wylan and Sonny Ankney, and Rhett Davis.
