Norman Edward Smith, age 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, December 14, 2025, at his home in Princes Lakes. He was a former resident of Indianapolis.
Norman was born on August 9, 1940, in Farmersville, Illinois to the late Raymond Charles and Mildred Ione (Armstrong) Smith. He attended Booneville High School and later dedicated 26 years of service to the Indianapolis Water Company, retiring in August of 1993 as Manager of Collections. Norman attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Franklin and formerly attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Edinburgh.
Norman remained active throughout his life and will be fondly remembered for his competitive spirit and love of a good game. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing basketball and later spent many hours pitching horseshoes, playing cornhole, and bowling as a member of the Family Affair Bowling League in Franklin. He was an avid fan of Indiana University basketball and the St. Louis Cardinals. Norman also loved card games—especially euchre, hands & feet, and pitch—and could often be found enjoying bingo, visiting garage sales, dancing, or singing karaoke. His enthusiasm, humor, and determination made every gathering more fun and memorable.
Norman is survived by his siblings, Vonna Basgall of Sharon Springs, Kansas, Verna M. Jett of Nineveh, David A. (Maureen) Smith of Nineveh, and Karen S. (Marion) Rogers of Morgantown; close friends, Mary Virginia “Ginny” Cummings of Franklin and Rick Burris of Indianapolis; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Ronnie Smith and Ray Smith.
Dr. Steven L. Smith will conduct a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 22nd at Meredith Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St., Morgantown. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
