Norma "Jean/Jeanie" Johnson Obituary

Norma “Jean/Jeanie” Johnson, age 82, passed away peacefully with her kitty companion, Hickory, by her side on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at her home in Greenwood.

Jean was born January 14, 1943 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to her parents, the late Basil E.  and Juanita May (Zeigler) Burge Sr. She was a 1960 graduate of Trafalgar High School and went on to marry Ronald “Ron/Ronnie” Lain Johnson on February 16, 1962 in Indianapolis. Together they were blessed with a beautiful daughter and 56 devoted years of marriage before his passing in 2018.

Jean was a licensed insurance agent and was the owner of ABC Insurance Agency in Indianapolis. There, she worked alongside her daughter, Amy, for a number of years until she entered retirement. Jean was an animal lover and enjoyed watching and feeding birds, squirrels and the neighborhood cats. She also spent her free time knitting and crocheting various blankets, socks, hats, scarves and animal figures. Jean loved to volunteer and give back to the community and was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel for her outstanding service to the community, state and nation.

She was a master gardener and had a love of caring for and giving the gift of plants to her friends and family. Above her love of plants, was her love of family, especially her grandson, Callon, who was her pride and joy.

She will be missed by her daughter, Amy (Mark) Richards of Martinsville; grandson, Callon Anthony Richards; brother, Basil E. Burge Jr of Lafe, Arkansas; bonus grandsons Noah and Sam Richards of Indianapolis, and several close cousins; nieces; Shelly (Scott) Bingham of Indianapolis, Karen (Andy) Payne of Greenfield, and Lorri (Brian) DuMonte of Paragould Arkansas. She is also survived by her wonderful neighbors, Dena, Kathy, Cozie, Trudy, Roger and Gilbert who she considered family.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ronald Johnson, Niece, Sally Ann Burge, all of her Aunts and Uncles and several faithful furry friends.

Friends may gather from 4 p.m. until service time on Thursday, May 8th at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home: 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown.
