Nora Patricia "Patty" Gushwa, 70, of Seymour, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her residence on Sunday evening, June 14, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Patty was born on June 12, 1956, in Hazard, Kentucky, to the late Charlie and Mabelline "Mabel" (Brewer) Couch. She graduated from Brown County High School in 1974 and later attended IUPUI, where she studied accounting.
Throughout her life, Patty combined a strong work ethic with a creative spirit. She was the owner and operator of Patty's Gems & Trinkets, where she shared her passion for handcrafted jewelry. Prior to owning her business, she worked in accounting for several companies and served as a SPOT Coordinator for the Brown County Humane Society.
Patty found joy in creating beautiful things. She loved making jewelry, tending her vegetable garden, and preserving the fruits of her labor through canning. An avid reader, she enjoyed novels by Stephen King and Nora Roberts. Family and friends will fondly remember her exceptional cooking and baking, which brought people together around her table.
Above all else, Patty cherished her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend whose love knew no bounds. She especially treasured her mother, Mabel, who would often call her "the sunshine of my life." Patty also had a special place in her heart for her beloved dogs, Olivia and Coco, whom she cared for with great affection.
Patty is survived by her husband, James D. "Jim" Gushwa, whom she married on June 12, 1982, in Brown County; her daughters, Missy Phillips of Nineveh and Megan Gushwa of Columbus; her sister, Pam (Chuck) Frye of Nineveh; her grandchildren, Dusty (Kristyn) Phillips of Fruitdale and Sierra (Kyle Dickson) Phillips of Indianapolis; her great-grandchildren, Everlee Phillips, Konnor Rorex, and Charlee Phillips; her nephew, Shane (Amanda) Frye of Nineveh; and her great-niece and great-nephew, Grace and Cole.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Tuesday, June 23, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Meredith Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street, Morgantown.
Memorial contributions may be made in Patty's honor to the Brown County Humane Society, 128 State Road 135 South, Nashville, Indiana 47448.
Patty's legacy of love, creativity, kindness, and devotion to family will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
