Ralph “Max” Schrougham, age 92, peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior and reunite with his beloved wife, Veda, on Saturday morning, May 16, 2026, at his home in Trafalgar.
Max was born in Brown County on May 11, 1934, to the late Ralph and Sheila (Walstead) Schrougham. He was a 1953 graduate of Helmsburg High School and went on to serve his country as a Specialist 4 in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on September 17, 1958.
Max was retired from General Motors Truck & Bus Plant in Indianapolis where he worked as a Machinist for over 30 years. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union Local 23 in Indianapolis. Max attended Unity Baptist Church in Brown County faithfully for over 60 years. He was a former board member of the Unity Baptist Church Cemetery. Max enjoyed pitching horseshoes, working jigsaw puzzles, and attending auctions. He also enjoyed metal scraping, playing euchre and attending antique jar shows with his son, Bruce.
Max married his high school sweetheart, Veda Irene (Dallas) Schrougham, on September 6, 1958, in Morgantown. She preceded him in death on May 21, 2024, after 65 loving years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by siblings, George Burns, Clovis, Raymond, Warren, Merrill & Pete Schrougham, Eva Ford and Faye Johnson.
Max is survived by his children, Julie (Don) Marcum of Seymour and Bruce (Donna) Schrougham of Trafalgar; grandchildren, Jessica (Jason) Spall of Lafayette, James (Sarah) Marcum of Seymour, Shane (Harlee) Schrougham of Franklin, Kyler Schrougham of Chicago, Illinois, and Jaden (Alexis Baty) Schrougham of Trafalgar; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The Rev. John Parsley will conduct a funeral service on Wednesday, May 27th at 11 a.m. at Meredith Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street, Morgantown. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, May 26th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Unity Baptist Church Cemetery in Brown County, with military honors presented by the Brown County Honor Guard and the United States Army.
