Marie Burkhart, age 96, was called to her heavenly home on Sunday morning, April 12, 2026. She passed peacefully at her home in Brown County, surrounded by her loving family.
Marie was born on July 4, 1929, in Lily, Kentucky, to her parents, the late Harvey and Bessie (Boggs) Roberts. She was a devoted minister’s wife and a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Alongside her husband, Rev. Frank Burkhart Jr., she was a founding member of Locust Grove Pentecostal Church in Brown County in 1960, where she remained a faithful and active member throughout her life.
Marie will be fondly remembered for her strong faith, her generous spirit, and her love of bringing people together. She was an exceptional cook who welcomed everyone to her table, always making sure no one left hungry. Her chicken and dumplings and her beloved strawberry yum-yum were favorites among family and friends. She found great joy in preparing homemade meals not only for her family but also for her church family.
In her quiet moments, Marie enjoyed quilting and faithfully reading her Bible each night. She was deeply proud of her family and instilled in them strong Christian values and the importance of love, faith, and togetherness. She will be especially missed by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she cherished dearly.
In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death on January 22, 1998 by her loving husband of 51 years, Rev. Frank Burkhart Jr., whom she married on December 2, 1946, in London, Kentucky; her daughter, Linda Johnson; her son, Eddie Burkhart; and her sisters, Lottie Frazier and Lucy Harris.
Marie is survived by her children, Oscar (Emily) Burkhart of Monroe, Georgia, and Vickie (Jay) Griffie of Brown County; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Locust Grove Pentecostal Church, 3522 Peoga Road in Trafalgar. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the church, officiated by Bro. Jay Griffie. Burial will take place at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
