Luis Carlos Lopez, age 79 passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at his home in Brown County.
Carlos was born August 25, 1946 in Tampico, Mexico. After graduating high school in California, he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics in 1970 from the University of Southern California. His sharp mind and love of learning guided him throughout his life and career.
Carlos began his career with the University of Southern California as a computer programmer before relocating to Canada in the late 1990s, where he assisted with worldwide Y2K preparation efforts and helped address the potential global technological challenges associated with the millennium transition. Carlos later moved to the Midwest, where he dedicated many years as a computer coder for Kentucky Farm Bureau in Louisville, until his retirement at the age of 70.
A true pioneer at heart, Carlos witnessed the incredible evolution of technology over the decades and never lost his fascination with innovation. From the earliest days of computer programming to the rapid advancements of the modern digital age, he embraced every new development with enthusiasm and wonder. Carlos was especially excited about Apple’s first iPhone and joined others in camping outside the Apple Store for its highly anticipated release. He proudly became the first person to purchase the new iPhone from the Apple Store in Louisville, Kentucky. He loved learning about emerging technologies, discussing future possibilities, and imagining where technology would lead the world next. Even in retirement, he continued exploring new devices, software, and ideas, always eager to understand how things worked and what innovations were on the horizon.
Carlos was an intelligent man with an IQ of 180 and was a member of Mensa International. He was an avid reader who especially enjoyed books by author C.J. Box. He loved keeping his mind active through card games, board games, puzzles, and especially Carlos also found joy in collecting unusual and eccentric treasures, each piece reflecting his unique personality and appreciation for life’s little curiosities. He also loved traveling with his wife, Donna, where they explored the United States, taking trips out west, to Florida, Niagara Falls and exploring new areas, most of the time in their 2010 Limited Edition Volkswagen Beetle Convertible. He cherished spending time with friends and meeting new people, but most of all, Carlos was proud to be an American and live in beautiful Brown County, where he was surrounded by trees and nature.
Carlos will be missed by his wife Donna (Kelp) Lutes, whom he married at 10:10 a.m. on October 10, 2010 in Nashville. Their special wedding date reflected the joy and love they shared together. He is also survived by three children, a sister and nephew, all of California as well as three stepchildren in Brown County..
Carlos was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
