James 'Jim' E. Smith

James E. ‘Jim’ Smith, age 90, of Brown County passed away peacefully on Friday morning, December 30, 2022 at Hickory Creek at Franklin.

Jim was born August 11, 1932 in Indianapolis to his parents, the late Chester L. and Mary (Hooker) Smith. He was a 1950 graduate of Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis and went on to serve as a Private First Class with the 753rd B Battery AAA Battalion of the United States Army.

Jim retired in 1990 as a Senior Field Rep. for Equifax after 33 years of service. He was a member of Collectors Club for Case Knives and the North American Hunting Club. Jim was an avid hunter who held a Lifetime Comprehensive Hunting License. Jim enjoyed fishing, pitching horseshoes, reading western books and watching western movies. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Betty Jo (Ficklin) Smith, whom he married on February 26, 1954 in Indianapolis. James was also preceded in death by siblings, Chester, Charles, Lawrence and Arvin Smith; and a grandson, William Scott Derringer.

He is survived by his children, Terri (Dale) Mayo of Brown County, Michael 'Mike' (Becky) Smith of Brown County and Gary Curtis (Mirare) Smith of Trafalgar; siblings, Myrtle M. Ware & Delores (Mike) Childress both of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren & several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Frank Criswell will conduct a funeral service on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends may call from 5 p.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home. Military rites will be presented by the United States Army and the Brown County Honor Guard. Entombment will take place at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
