George W. Wetzel

George W. Wetzel, age 83, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday afternoon, March 23, 2026, at Brown County Health & Living Community. He was a longtime resident of Brown County.

George was born on December 4, 1942, in Indianapolis to the late Charles and Mildred (Henry) Wetzel. He attended Southport High School and went on to marry the love of his life, Diana K. Sipes, on September 15, 1962, in Bargersville. Together, they built a life centered on faith and family, raising four children: George, Christopher, Dawn and Elizabeth.

George will be remembered for his years of dedicated work as a butcher at the IGA in Nashville, where he became a familiar and friendly face behind the meat counter. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and found joy in horseback riding, coon hunting, ice fishing and mushroom hunting. Above all else, he loved God and cherished his family.

He will be missed by his wife of 63 years, Diana Wetzel of Brown County; children, George Steven Wetzel of Unionville, Christopher (Linda) Wetzel of Nineveh, Honey Dawn Sheppard of Sevierville, Tennessee and Elizabeth (Mike) Leppert of Nineveh; grandchildren, Dustin (Amanda) Sheppard, Desi (Max) Van Rite, Shaena (Max) Litwin, Tiana (Jake) Walter, Hannah (Ridge) Harris, Alexis Sheppard and Taylor Sheppard; great grandchildren: Jaydin Sheppard, Callahan Litwin, Chandler Sheppard, Madi Van Rite, Skylar Van Rite, Samson Harris, Lincoln Van Rite, Finn Walter and Sullivan Walter; brothers, Charlie Wetzel and Russell Wetzel as well as several nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, JoAnn Isom, Edward Wetzel, Treva Wetzel and Bob Wetzel.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026 at Meredith Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 2nd at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Taggart Cemetery in Brown County.
