Darwin G. Popplewell, age 83 passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, October 15, 2022 at Brown County Health & Living Community in Nashville. He was a resident of Brown County.
Darwin was born December 18, 1938 in Russell Springs, KY, to the late Emmitt and Maudie (Johnson) Popplewell. He retired in 1995 from General Motors where he was employed for 30 years as a Millwright. Darwin enjoyed woodworking, fishing and listening to Gospel music. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union Local 23 in Indianapolis and attended the Edinburgh Separate Baptist Church.
Darwin was preceded in death on May 30, 2001 by his first wife of 41 years, Melvina (Sinclair) Popplewell, whom he married on August 27, 1960 in Columbia, KY. He later married Betty J. (Bolin) Popplewell on November 24, 2003 in Camby. She preceded him in death on February 10, 2022. Darwin was also preceded in death by siblings, Margie Chumbley, Nona Silar, Audeen Fox, Vonda Fizer, Coy, Dewell, Kirby, Bruce & Ocus Popplewell.
He is survived by his children, Sheila F. Popplewell of Brown County and Sean (Chaun) Popplewell of North Carolina; step children, Rev. Kirby (Susan) Popplewell Jr. of Indianapolis, Angela Bowen of Scottsburg, Patricia (Kenny) Burns of Fairland, Terry (Jeff) Morton of Flat Rock, Pamela (Terry) Simpson of Shelbyville, Teresa (Tim) Swift of New Palestine & Lisa (James) Jordan of Fairland; siblings, Marsel Popplewell Russell Springs, KY, Thurman Popplewell of Columbus & Katie (Jerry) Hatfield of Russell County, KY; grandchildren, Gabe Popplewell of Morgantown and Grace Popplewell of North Carolina; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
The Rev. Ed Tharpe will conduct a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Meredith - Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center located at 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
