Daniel D. “Dan” Hoagland, age 78 of Franklin (formerly of Morgantown), passed away on Friday evening, January 17, 2025 at Ascension St. Vincent in Carmel.
Dan was born in Martinsville on September 2, 1946, to the late Isaac N. and Charlene F. (Haggard) Hoagland. He was a 1966 graduate of Morgantown High School and went on to serve as a Sergeant with the 7520th United States Air Force Hospital Unit until he was honorably discharged in 1969. Dan retired in 2008 from Cummins Engine Company in Columbus where he worked as an ATM Repairman for over 38 years.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Morgantown, United Auto Diesel Workers Union and the Brown County American Legion. Dan was a gifted acrylic artist, known for his landscape paintings on saws and reclaimed wood. He enjoyed camping with his family at Indian Lakes in Clifford, Indiana, and was a passionate fan of the Indiana Hoosiers in football and basketball, as well as the Indianapolis Colts. Dan was also an avid reader, particularly fond of novels by John Grisham, Stephen King, and Dean Koontz. His favorite television programs included Yellowstone, Jeopardy and old westerns.
In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by siblings, Isaac “Ike” Hoagland, Winona Barnett, Luella “Lu” Huff and Robert “Bob” Hoagland.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Opal M. “Opie” (Patterson) Hoagland, whom he married on January 16, 1970 in Morgantown. Dan is also survived by his son, Joshua (Carrie) Hoagland of Camby; siblings, Charles Hoagland of Martinsville, Samuel (Sandra) Hoagland of Franklin; grandchildren, Cara (Josh) Matthews of Indianapolis, Dylan Rossman of Piscataway, NJ and Macy Morgan of Carmel; great grandson, Corey Colwell of Indianapolis; sister in laws, Frances Hoagland of Bloomington and Rosie Hurst of Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Dan’s Life will be conducted by Rev. Burt Brock at 4 p.m. on Friday, January 24th at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street, Morgantown. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until the service time on Friday at the funeral home. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force and the Brown County Honor Guard.
