Anthony A. ‘Tony’ Smith, age 68 passed away peacefully on Friday morning, December 16, 2022 at his home in Morgantown.
Tony was born February 22, 1954 in Terrell, Texas, to the late William H. and Melvina L. (Day) Smith. He attended West Washington High School in Salem and went on to serve as a Private First Class with the Company D 2nd Battalion 1st Brigade Combat Team of the United States Army. Tony also served with the Indiana National Guard for six years. Tony retired after working construction for most of his life. After retirement, he worked as a Lot Porter for Hobson Chevrolet in Martinsville for several years.
Tony was a faithful member of the Morgantown General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn and a former member of the Martinsville VFW. He enjoyed mowing grass, fishing and was always willing to help those in need. He will be remembered most for his love of his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Melanie A. (Allen) Smith, whom he married on April 18, 1975 in Morgantown. Tony is also survived by his children, Randi (Ronald) Owens of Martinsville, Kaitlin (Wesley) Molloy of Martinsville, Kayla (Christopher) Wilkinson of Parkland, OK, William Smith of Morgantown and Christopher (Heather) Smith of Gatesville; siblings, Jeanette Lindsey of Hodgenville, KY, Tammy Costin of Florida, William (Kim) Smith of California, Dean (Tuesday) Jenkins of Fargo, ND & Richard Wiseman of TX; grandchildren, Tyler (Jennifer Richardson) Cherry, Trenton (Caitlyn) Cherry, Travis (Audree) Cherry, Hunter Owens, Joshua Owens, Gabriel Zike, Austin Curtis Smith, Aiden Wilkinson, Christopher Dale Smith II, Phoenix Smith, Jacob Molloy, Karter Molloy and Joseph Molloy; and great grandchildren, Elayna, Amelia, Sophie, Rilyn and Rhett.
He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew R. Smith; brothers, Joseph Smith & James Edward Smith; and a grandson, Dakota Wagers-Smith.
Brothers Jeff Bryant and Brett Gladden will conduct a funeral service on Monday at 1 p.m. at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown with military rites.
