A. B. Groves

A. B. Groves, age 86 of Martinsville, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, November 23, 2023 at St. Franciscan Hospice House in Indianapolis.

A. B. was born April 9, 1937 in Franklin, Kentucky to his parents, the late Shelby Arthur and Beulah May (Chandler) Groves. He was named after the Kentucky governor A. B. Chandler and grew up on a farm in Kentucky before moving to Indiana at the age of 19. He married the love of his life, Betty Sue Rice on February 2, 1956 in Franklin, Kentucky. She preceded him in death in 2010 after 54 loving years of marriage.

He retired in 2000 from Amtrack Railroad in Beech Grove where he had been a welder and fabricator for 26 years. A. B.’s great sense of humor made family get-togethers memorable. His advice to family and friends was to “Mind your own business, take care of yourself and everything will fall into place.” A. B. loved spending time in the outdoors by camping, fishing and hunting for squirrel, rabbit and raccoon. He also enjoyed playing his harmonica, and traveling to Pike’s Peak, the Smokey Mountains and to a ski resort in northern New York.

He will be missed by his children; Donna (Danny) Lines, Vickie (Rusty) Laker, and Dale Groves all of Indianapolis, Kenny (Bobbie) Groves of Mt. Comfort, Terri Williams of Greenfield, Steven (Robin) Groves and Dawn Rosebrock both of Indianapolis and Michael Groves of Waverly; 16 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

A. B. was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty Groves, siblings: Shelby Jr., and Jimmy “Jim” Groves and a son, Kelly Groves.

The Rev. Burt Brock will conduct a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 30th at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.  Burial will follow at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Waverly.
